Dr. Paul Roof, recent Associate Professor at Charleston Southern University, has been defrocked because he appears on a beer can. This rather bizarre piece of news is very real. See, Dr. Proof sports a very large, manicured, unique beard and mustache. He is a member of beard and mustache enthusiast culture. So one day at a beard and mustache competition, Dr. Roof was photographed in full barbaic glory. As far as the good professor knew, the photograph was simply a part of the competition.
Well, much to his scholarly surprise, his bearded image appeared on the canned logo of a particular brew by Charleston craft brewers Holy City Brewing. Because CSU is a Christian college, and thus wary of association with beer, Professor Roof was summarily fired. But the plot thickens. Dr. Roof had no idea that his image was going to be used in this manner. He gave no such permissions, and he has received no notices, warnings, or royalties. Think about this for a moment: what would you think if your face suddenly appeared on a beer can logo?
Well, CSU sent Dr. Roof an email apprising him of the situation. He explained his innocence to his Dean, but the Vice President of the university nevertheless fired him. As Dr. Roof describes it, “I was given an email message early this week. I met with my dean Wednesday, and my answers were sufficient for him… but on Friday, I was called into the VP’s office, and that’s where I was terminated.”
Dr. Roof has his supporters. According to him, “The response. Social media, from students that I had 15 years ago, 8 years ago, has been overwhelming.”
Dr. Roof continues by commenting on the supposed Christian environment that he was ejected from: “I was told that it was not representative of a Christian environment. And for me a Christian environment entails two things: looking out for other people and forgiveness of others who’ve transgressed you.”
Well, in the opinion of this Everything On Tap reporter, the whole situation is absurd. Sure, a private, religious college has the right to decide its own standards of morality for its students and faculty. Fair enough. But Dr. Roof had nothing to do with this! His only crime was growing hair — something God gave him. He had no idea that his image would be used on a beer can. So it is unreasonable for the university to hold him morally responsible, and to punish him, for something that he was not involved with in any way. So Charleston Southern University, if you are reading this, reinstate Dr. Roof. He did nothing wrong!
