Little Bitch Otter and Same-Sex Marriage in Idaho: EOT Beer News

In my home state of Louisiana, we are famous (infamous) for political corruption, intrigue, and mudslinging. So when I heard about some current political issues in Idaho, I was surprised to see that politics there can also be down and dirty. The issue at hand involves beer, and same-sex marriage. Wait, what? Yes indeed, the two are intermingled here.

The Governor of Idaho’s name is C.L. “Butch” Otter. Recently, Crooked Fence Brewing Company announced its new India brown ale (as categorized by the company),named Little Bitch Otter. The logo features an otter dressed as the Governor typically dresses: wearing a tie and a cowboy hat.

The controversy surrounds same-sex marriage. A federal judge recently overturned Idaho’s ban on same-sex marriage, thereby paving the way for legal Idaho same-sex marriages. Governor Otter did not like this, so he immediately filed a request to stop the ruling from being implemented, and file for an appeal. The Governor’s re-election is currently under way.

Crooked Fence Brewing takes issue with the Governor’s opposition to same-sex marriage. The brewery’s marketing director, Kelly Knopp, stated: “Anyone that is going to try to take away freedoms or not let someone be equal, Crooked Fence is against. This is our way of nudging the issue and not being afraid to lose a few customers. If they feel like it’s offensive we will deal with that when it arises.”

Wherever you stand on same-sex marriage, it is my opinion that breweries are right to take stands on social issues. If they do not,who will? And, since beer in the US has always represented the common people, rather than the wealthy, privileged elite, then breweries should represent the will of the people, not of the politicians. So power to the people, I say, and go drink more craft beer!
