There seem to be so many beer associations these days, that it is hard to keep track of them all. One of the important ones, however, is the Beer Institute. The Beer Institute is organized in favor of the brewers, importers, and suppliers of the US beer industry. They have recently named Senator Mark Udall (D-CO) a the winner of the 2014 Jeff Becker Beer Industry Service Award. The award was bestowed upon the Senator on May 13, 2014. This award recognizes the Senator’s commitment to the US beer industry and its consumers.
One of Senator Udall’s important contribution to the beer industry in the US and in Colorado, is his sponsorship of the Brewers Excise and Economic Relief Act (BEER Act), bill S.958. This bill hopes to kill new federal excise taxes for brewers and beer importers. This would, in turn, reduce taxes for consumers.
According to the Beer Institute’s Chairman Luiz Edmond, “Senator Udall has been an outstanding advocate for the brewing industry from Colorado to Capitol Hill. He has proven over and over again his passion for and dedication to brewers and beer drinkers across the U.S. by fighting federal beer excise tax increases and protecting the industry from unnecessary government regulation.”
Senator Udall explained, “Colorado is not only the largest beer-producing state in the country, we’re also the most innovative. That’s why I am honored to receive the Jeff Becker Beer Industry Service Award. The brewing industry has played such a vital role in our state’s economy, contributing millions of dollars in wages and creating Colorado jobs. We need to help our brewers keep our pint glasses full and our economy strong.”
Hats off to Senator Udall. It would be great if more and more Senators promoted the beer industry and its customers. After all, beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage in the United States. And as the craft beer industry continues to burgeon and flourish, producing excellent beer, we need all of the governmental help that we can get, in order to ensure that we continue to be able to purchase high-quality beer at reasonable prices.
