When I attended the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, our graduation dinner, to which our family and friends were invited, was held at the James Beard House. James Beard was an American chef and food writer who was pivotal in bringing gourmet French cuisine to the US, and establishing a true gourmet food culture in the States. Well, the annual James Beard Awards in New York are a very important institution that recognizes the greatest names in food, restaurants, and beverages. It is therefore a great honor when a brewer earns the award for the Outstanding Wine, Beer or Spirits Professional. Brooklyn Brewery’s Garret Oliver was awarded this honor for 2014.
Brooklyn Brewery, makers of Brooklyn IPA — a generally high-rated ale — should be proud of this honor. It demonstrates that the country’s best gourmet food and beverage consider Mr. Oliver to be a real professional and an important part of the craft beer scene in the US. I am a moderate fan of Brooklyn Brewery, and I hope that this recognition will drive the company to even greater heights of flavorful craft brewing.
